Paint Door Hinge

I am thrilled to report that the spray paint jobs on all of the hinges and door knobs has held up great even in high use areas.

After the primer has thoroughly dried spray hardware with metallic paint 7 the home depot. I painted hinges for my kitchen cabinets. However because we had removed all the doors to paint them we just remove all the hinges with a drill and bit or you can use a screwdriver. If avoiding the hard work that comes with removing the door from the hinges isn t enticing enough think about how the crisp metallic finish on your door hinges will look when the paint has dried.

Once dry i sprayed one very light coat of primer and then about 3 or 4 light coats of gold spray paint. After it is dry reinstall the hardware on the door. Most of the time this can be accomplished with a quick coat of spray primer and paint. Finally remove and paint all the bottom hinges and then reinstall them.

However if you re planning to paint brass hinges there are a few things you need to know before you get started. Of course that is quite easy to fix with paint so we re not worried. Hinges can be difficult to change out and costly. Use spray enamel for the hinges because if you prepare the hinges properly it s less likely to chip and peel when you open and close the doors than paint.

Hinge removal unscrew the hinges from the cabinet doors and remove the doors. Be sure the spray paint is intended for metal surfaces and both indoor and outdoor use if necessary. With one exception which is entirely our fault. Then unscrew the hinges from the cabinets themselves using a screwdriver.

Painting over hinges sounds like a great idea on the surface but for most people the decision to paint around hinges is the better one. Because they ve been on the doors for a long time i washed the hinges with a sugar soap solution to remove any dirt grease and build up. To ensure no fingerprints are left in the paint allow the hardware to dry for 24 hours. The pic below shows them after the primer and 1 coat of gold spray paint.

Spray painting the hinges is a cost effective option to replacing all the kitchen cabinet hinges. It will take a little extra time maybe a few days because of the drying time but it was much easier than removing the doors.
